2 Crashes on I-75 in Marion County Leave 3 Dead in 1 Week

MARION COUNTY, FL (June 18, 2019) — One man was killed while traveling on I-75 in Marion County. The man, Lazaro Sanchez, 52, of Miami, was the passenger in the box truck that his son, Cesar Sanchez, 23, also of Miami, was driving.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened at approximately 12:32 p.m when a tractor-trailer had to slow down while traveling in the middle lane. The box truck driven by Cesar did not slow down and crashed into the back of the trailer.

Lazaro Sanchez did not survive the crash but his son, Cesar, was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center and reported to be in stable condition.

Because of the crash, all lanes of I-75 northbound south of CR 484 were shut down for hours, only reopening again by 4 p.m.

On June 13, a double fatality occurred when two European motorcyclists were killed, also on I-75 northbound lanes just south of the box truck accident. Due to another accident in the area, one of the motorcyclists attempted to slow down as traffic slowed but lost control of his motorcycle. After the rider lost control, the other motorcyclist behind him chose to lay down his bike to avoid hitting his fellow rider. Both died after being run over by a semi-truck. This accident also shut down all northbound lanes of I-75 for hours.

These tragic accidents show us just how important it is that we take precaution while driving at all times. Florida is no stranger to clogged up roadways due to rush hour traffic, roadwork, tourist season, or large local events like Daytona Bike Week which means we must take our safety and the safety of others on the road seriously no matter the time of day or year. For perspective, Florida’s Integrated Report Exchange System reports that in 2018 there was over 400,000 total crashes in Florida. More than half of those crashes resulted in injuries and over 3,000 resulted in traffic fatalities.
